Il quattro volte campione del mondo di Formula Uno Lewis Hamilton è arrivato a gran velocità alla cerimonia del Global Teacher Prize in una Mercedes Benz GTC, scortato da tre supercar della Polizia di Dubai (Ferrari, Mercedes SL AMG e Audi R8), giungendo proprio al momento giusto per consegnare sul palco il trofeo del Global Teacher Prize.
In uno speciale video messaggio di congratulazioni trasmesso nella sala della cerimonia, il Primo Ministro britannico Theresa May, ha detto:
“Per essere un grande insegnante occorre elasticità, ingegnosità ed un cuore generoso. Queste sono le qualità che Lei offre ai suoi studenti ogni giorno. La ringrazio per ciò che ha fatto e che continuerà a fare.
“Voglio inoltre esprimere il mio più sincero ringraziamento a Sua Altezza lo Sceicco Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum per il suo sostegno alla professione dell’insegnamento e per il patrocinio a questo premio.”

“La comunità del Brent dove insegno è meravigliosamente varia ed è probabilmente una delle più multi culturali nel mondo.
“E’ però una comunità dove sfortunatamente molti dei nostri studenti vivono in povertà. Conducono vite diffiicli, in case sovraffollate. A volte non si nutrono adeguatamente perchè non hanno il cibo. Alcuni sono costretti a saltare la scuola perché dividono la cucina con altre famiglie e non possono perdere il turno per cucinare.
“Queste sfide sembrano tipiche di un romanzo di Dickens più che della Gran Bretagna del ventunesimo secolo. E tuttavia è sorprendente come, qualunque sia il probema a casa, qualunque cosa gli manchi o gli causi dolore, la nostra scuola è la loro. Non ho dubbi che se potessimo aprire alle 6 del mattino, ci sarebbe la coda di ragazzi per entrare già alle 5. Questo dimostra quanto sono eccezionali.
“Sappiamo che gli studenti che dedicano più tempo alle materie artistiche, hanno risultati migliori anche nel resto dei loro studi. Ma ciò a cui tengo di più è qualcosa di più importante.
